Grote Markt: Binnen de oudste omwalling werd de huidige markt het hart waarrond de vitale diensten voor de bevolking werden opgericht. In 1383 werd het gedeelte voor de lakenhalle gekasseid. In 1557 werd de Grote Markt opgehoogd en er werd begonnen met het kasseien van de rest van de markt. In 1792 werd zij Place Washington genoemd. De meeste huizen aan de Grote Markt hadden tot voor de 1ste Wereldoorlog een gans ander aanzicht. Tijdens de beschietingen van de stad werden er op de Grote Markt meer dan 3/4de van de huizen totaal verwoest.
Within the oldest fortifications the current marketplace became the core around which the most vital services for the population were built. In 1383 the part in front of the cloth-hall was paved. In 1557 the Grote Markt was constructed and they started to pave the rest of the marketplace. In 1792 it was called Place Washington. Most of the houses had a totally different style prior to the first World War. During the bombardments on the city and the resulting inferno, at the end of september 1914, more than 3/4th of the houses were completely demolished.
